Skills breakdown

Primaries
  • crafts.hunting.tracking (gives you the track command, useful in pk or for finding named npcs and whether they are still alive or “up” as some people like to say)
  • crafts.hunting.trapping (solitary use is during the kidnap bp family missions)
  • crafts.materials.leatherwork (leatherworking is actually quite handy given you need considerably more skill to leatherwork items than to fix similarly damaged items)
  • crafts.medicine.firstaid (very handy skill used when bandaging yourself or friends – more effective at higher bonuses)
  • fighting.defence.dodging (a good defensive skill)
  • fighting.defence.parrying (another good defensive skill)
  • fighting.melee.axe (they deal lots of damage)
  • fighting.melee.dagger (more effective at lower bonuses than the other melee skills but why not just play a thief or assassin and get backstab – no warrior specials currently)
  • fighting.melee.mace (decent damage weapon not great when used in combination with parry due to parry penalties)
  • fighting.melee.sword (most people’s choice: swords have nice damage, good variation, various warrior specials and suit both dodge and parry)
  • fighting.points (your max gp is decided by this one)
  • fighting.range.bow (no bows available right now)
  • fighting.special.tactics (very useful, decides how well warcry is defended against and produced also has influence on action point regeneration)
  • fighting.special.weapon (used for preparing specials and affects how long specials take to execute in combat)
  • adventuring.movement.climbing.tree (almost useless used in one, maybe two, quests and gathering crystal eggs – despite the verdant forests that cover large portions of the disc they are hardly any trees that are climbable right now)

What to advance initially?

As a new hunter I would pick a melee skill and defensive skill (more on this below) and advance them both to a decent level as soon as you can. Also spend a bit of your experience on adventuring.health so you do not die so often. Keep advancing these three and finally add some fighting.special.tactics and lastly fighting.special.weapon so that you can use the main fighting specials. After this you can choose what to advance but these will be your four main skills for a long time; this applies for most discworld warriors.

Melee and Defence Choices

As a hunter you have a few different options for offensive and defensive weapons and skills.

The usual set-ups are listed here.

Sword and Parry

Axe and Parry

Dagger and Dodge

Mace and Parry

Other possible set-ups that might be trickier are below.

Sword and Parry + Dodge

Mace and Dodge
